Summary: Everyone agrees on the importance of data in an organization’s learning structure. Unfortunately, data alone will not suffice. It is essential to convert the data your platform has collected about the behavior of your learners to something more substantial. This way you can to build a personal and engaging learning experience. Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role in this, and this eBook will provide you with an in-depth explanation of how this is possible. It will also bring you up to date with all the exciting new possibilities AI has opened for L&D professionals. This eBook explores all the compelling ways you can use an AI platform in your organization's training.

How To Use AI Platform In Training

The next big thing for L&D professionals everywhere is learning-specific algorithms. These are algorithms that use the concepts of machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing. These 3 concepts are what make it possible to use an AI platform in your organization's training.

  1. Machine Learning is about a digital system that can learn dynamically. For example, a smartphone may learn to recognize your facial features or your voice just by taking a selfie or talking to it for a few seconds.
  2. Deep Learning describes how a machine can use the digital equivalent of neural networks to understand how to do something. These networks can process vast quantities of data through multiple tiers. With time, the system can train itself to make sense of these data, and make decisions about them on its own.
  3. Natural Language Processing refers to the ability of machines to understand and interpret human language, written or spoken. Its objective is to make computers/machines as intelligent as humans in understanding text and speech.

Have Your Software Work For You

In a recent survey conducted by Boston Consulting Group and MIT Sloan, 3000 people answered questions about AI in their industries. All of them had managerial positions in their respective organizations. The results indicated that many executives understand the potential of using an AI platform for training, but do not have the know-how to act on it.

Learning and Development has changed a lot over the years. The industry now has a better understanding of the need to accept new technology. It recognizes how vital Instructional Design is and invests heavily in professional development. Also, it is focusing once more on learning outcomes rather than fundamentalist methods and is exploring new ways to achieve this, such as the incorporation of simulation and gamification. That's why using AI platforms to optimize training is the next logical step of L&D evolution.

One of the most time-consuming tasks L&D professionals face is the design of course catalogs. AI could handle this task. With the right metadata, a machine can categorize elements and follow through with the appropriate actions. In this case, we can use recommendation engines in conjunction with what is known for the user’s behavior to develop and provide relevant learning course catalogs. By assigning tasks like that to AI, L&D leaders will have more time to focus on more critical aspects of the design process, like content and structure.

A Different Way To Think Of Software

So, what makes AI different from previous technologies we have used in the past? All the other tools we have ever used were reliant on our intent and perception, no matter how powerful they were. What AI brings to the table is the ability to move past these limitations. It is now the software that discerns the meaning behind the data we provide, not the user. This feature is why an AI platform can help us solve problems regarding training that we didn’t even realize we had.

It’s essential, however, to understand that this kind of software also has different needs. AI relies on data injections regularly to function effectively. You can imagine AI as a learner—the more material it has, the further it will improve. Provide good quality material to them, and they will one day become experts in their field.

In the same way that a learner needs to understand a topic from various angles, so does the AI. It needs to understand the different variables for completing a task by "seeing" different types of input data. Some AI systems are so advanced that they can self-determine their own actions after they review the data. Therefore, the more you use an AI platform for training purposes, the better it will become at it.

How Does Auto-Tagging Work

An excellent example of this is auto-tagging algorithms. These are used to automatically find the most appropriate tags for any article. First of all, the algorithm needs to learn what to look for in a post. To achieve that, we have to "feed" it a huge amount of content that is already tagged correctly. The system studies it and tries to create a “theory” on how categories are assigned based on variables, such as keywords and links. Then, it tests the theory on the content we provided and sees if it matches our tags. If it does, it means that the method it developed is correct. Finally, it uses that method to categorize articles that have not been assigned tags yet. Likewise, if we can keep feeding it more content, it will keep improving its results indefinitely.

AI Platforms Change Training

According to Docebo:

Docebo’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) debuted with version 7.5 in September 2018. This includes a comprehensive global search for content within the platform, as well as automatically generated labels for formal and informal learning content. With Invite-To-Watch, users can invite students to view informal learning content they have uploaded to the platform. As with many new features and functionalities in our platform, we want to ensure that you know exactly what’s going on and how to best use these innovative and time-saving features. This document outlines some questions and answers that you may have about Docebo’s Artificial Intelligence capabilities and the practical applications the technology offers to enterprise learning.
