Training Millennials: The Ultimate Cheat Sheet

Employers mostly hear about all of the negative stereotypes of the Millennial Generation: that they have short attention spans, that they want everything handed to them, that they will move on to another career just as quickly as they are given one. Personally, as a member of the generation, I believe there are many benefits to having Millennials as a part of a workforce if an employer knows how to properly take advantage of our unique talents.

The main reason that Millennials appear so vastly different to past generations is that we have been raised immersed in technology. Because of this, we can naturally pick up new facets of technology as quickly as they are developed, we can learn and transmit information at a rapid pace, and we are excellent multitaskers. The key lies in taking advantage of these traits. One major way that Millennials’ knack for technology can be utilized is during job training. With eLearning, companies can create custom content to train their workers. This way, millennial workers can learn job skills via the medium we are most comfortable with: the internet. We can learn crucial information such as safety procedures and be trained on the supply chain quickly and efficiently without disrupting productivity. eLearning will appeal far more to millennial workers than a boring conference room meeting or a thick paper handout that will probably go unread.

Most Millennials have experienced eLearning before, whether for school or for a past job. We know how to absorb information from these programs with ease. We also know what makes a good or a bad video; we’ve seen boring PowerPoints, laughable reenactments of possible work scenarios, and safety procedure videos that look like they were made in the 80s. So, if a newly hired Millennial begins working with a company and is trained with an eLearning system that is technologically up to date, has quality graphics and sound, and is easy to follow, he or she will perceive that the company is on the cutting edge of technology. If we see that our employer can grow with the ever-changing world of technology, we will see that our employer can grow with us too. High quality and customized eLearning can also tell millennial workers that our time and talents are respected because it is catered to the way that we learn. Because of this, we will be more likely to work harder, feel more fulfilled, and be loyal to our employer. It becomes part of a beneficial cycle that begins with utilizing technology to train new millennial workers, keeping those millennial workers happy and loyal, and thus attracting more millennial workers.

eLearning is well-suited to the main characteristic of today’s work environment: Change. Changing workers, changing workplaces, changing technology. eLearning is easily customizable to keep up to pace with the rate at which technology, work procedures, and the workers themselves develop. eLearning is open to change in the same way that Millennials are, making it a perfect fit.
