The Spacing Effect: Harnessing The Power Of Spaced Practice For Learning That Sticks

Memory is fundamental to learning. More precisely, it is very important to move what we learn from short-term to long-term memory. In other words, we need to repeat, review, recall, and practice what we have learned at spaced intervals in time. Nowadays, we refer to this practice as "spaced practice."

Based on recent research findings, one of the most fundamental principles of learning science begs the question: "Why is spaced practice so infrequently implemented in the design of learning systems?"

Drawing on an earlier paper by Donald Clark about the theory behind spaced practice, as well as the latest white paper published by Learning Pool, "The Spacing Effect: Harnessing The Power Of Spaced Practice For Learning That Sticks," we aim to answer this question. To be exact, during this webinar we will demonstrate how this well-established knowledge about the workings of memory can be applied in practical situations using modern learning technology.

Throughout this session, podcaster and writer, John Helmer and Learning Pool’s Head of Innovation, Lindsey Coode will discuss:

  • The theory behind spaced practice
  • What it looks like in practice
  • How to support learners to learn and relearn the skills they need to be more productive in their jobs
  • How to harness learning technology to harness the spacing effect
