Summary: Learning is more effective when students are engaged with the subject being studied. For this reason, it's important to create an engaging environment for your students. The following is a list of LMS trends, that will be trending this year, to provide an immersive learning experience.

Education Industry Trends To Watch In 2023

From the onset of the pandemic, the use of Learning Management Systems (LMSs) to deliver online courses, skill courses, K-12 online schools by educational institutions, and remote employee onboarding has been on a constant rise. So, here is an overview of the LMS trend that we can look forward to in 2023.

What Is A Learning Management System?

A Learning Management system is a software application or online web platform that helps teachers and educational institutions to deliver quality online classes, and share resources, tools, and study materials in and out of the classroom. Primarily, an LMS helps teachers to offer tailored instruction/classes, which can be accessed any time, from anywhere without any geographical constraints.

Why Is LMS Important For Education?

Other than offering online and live classes, an LMS helps in administration, tracking, and reporting. Statistics show that around 90% of students prefer learning online to traditional learning methods. Here are a few pointers on the benefits of LMSs and why they are important for education.

  • Complete or partial replacement of frontal teaching
  • Management of students and student records
  • Management of courses or subjects
  • Hassle-free teacher-student/parent communication.
  • Tracking student progress in curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Increased student engagement and improved memory retention when learning from video, compared to traditional teaching styles

LMS Trends In 2023

Every Learning and Development (L&D) department brings forth many strategies for effective learning and student engagement, some of which are listed below and are expected to be trending this year.

1. Personalized Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI) ensures unique experiences for each learner by analyzing their behavior, the courses they have most frequently interacted with, and their learning style, using machine learning. This data is then used to determine what is most important to a learner and to present courses that correspond to this, in order to provide a less linear but more efficient pathway to information retention. Thus, each user gets a personalized learning experience.

2. Immersive Learning With Augmented Reality And Virtual Reality

  • Augmented Reality (AR)
Remember the massive hit that was the game Pokemon GO? There is no game strategy in Pokemon GO; it has an intuitive design in which small, cute creatures are virtually blended with our real world. We can even say that Pokemon GO was a precursor for apps integrated with Augmented Reality. Online education will undergo a paradigm shift as a result of AR. L&D managers are already attempting to integrate AR into online learning environments. With AR, classroom and online education can be extraordinary, immersive, and more interactive, as AR can enable teachers to show virtual examples of concepts.
  • Virtual Reality (VR)
Students can visit the universe and explore pivotal historical moments up close and personal with VR technology, all without ever leaving the classroom. L&D managers are also attempting to integrate natural language processing (NLP) into eLearning systems. A couple of NLP examples include Alexa and Siri. Even though the use of VR in eLearning systems is still in its infancy, it has the potential to significantly change the way that education is delivered online. For example, a science teacher can give students an immersive experience of being on Mars or the moon without leaving the classroom—all that is needed is a VR set.

3. AI-Based Learning Management System

Artificial Intelligence plays a huge role in eLearning platforms. Lessons adapt to your learning behavior. AI makes your learning platform adaptable to individual needs, thereby enhancing user engagement. AI’s deep learning helps identify student behavior and where they lack knowledge and then recommends the necessary lessons and course materials the students need to bridge the knowledge gap.

4. Nano Learning

We want to learn, but we also want to learn efficiently. Attention span is a key component when it comes to effective learning. How much a student has understood depends on how long they spend carefully listening to and comprehending a lecture as the instructor teaches. Smartphones and other technologies have had a negative impact on the attention span of almost the entire current student generation. So, to effectively teach the students, eLearning trends will opt for nano learning. According to MIT research, a teaching video should be no longer than six minutes in duration [5]. In nano learning, the lessons will consist of bite-sized lessons in the form of videos or interactive games. One such example is Duolingo, a platform to learn languages in the form of fun mini-lessons that feel like games!

5. Gamification

Learning doesn't have to be boring! With gamification, you can build your skills each day with engaging exercises and playful characters, getting rewarded for performing well. What would you choose if someone handed you the choice between a textbook and a PlayStation? Of course, the PlayStation, right? Who would not forego reading a book in favor of playing games? Right, not everyone chooses to learn dry academic topics. What if we integrated gaming into education? L&D managers work incredibly hard to use games to impart lessons, as they foster higher memory retention rates. Gamification encourages participation in training by portraying it as a "play thing." Gamification also increases the motivation to work and accomplish more. According to one statistic, 83% of employees who go through "gamified" training (online training for employee onboarding and upskilling) are more motivated at work.

Conclusion

Whatever the LMS trend will be in 2023, at the end of the day the main motto of any course is producing high-impact, effective, and quality learning experiences.
