Analytics For The Classroom Teacher - Curtin On edX

Curtin University’s latest Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) titled Analytics for the Classroom Teacher, provides an introduction to the emerging field of teaching and learning analytics from the perspective of a classroom teacher.

Data-driven decision-making in schools is a global trend aiming to support School Autonomy and allow schools to meet both external requirements of accountability to regulatory standards, as well as internal continuous self-evaluation and improvement needs.

As a result, Data Literacy for Teachers is now recognised as a key set of competencies to be included in both Pre-Service Teacher Education and In-Service Teachers' Professional Development.

Professor Demetrios Sampson, from Curtin’s School of Education, developed the MOOC and said the course is designed to respond to this global need by introducing Educational Data Analytics to both school teachers and university students studying education.

“Starting from the current global trend of using educational data to make data-driven, evidence-based decisions at various levels (classroom teaching, school self-evaluation and improvement, curriculum and policy revisions) and from various stakeholders (teachers, school leaders, curriculum leaders, policy makers), the course will focus on guiding the classroom teacher through the use of educational data analytics for improving teaching and learning,” Professor Sampson said.

“Experts from all over the world will help our MOOC participants to get an overview of current, state-of-the-art methods and tools for teaching and learning analytics, before they take a step-by-step online tour of how to use teaching and learning analytics tools to analyse the design and the classroom delivery of lesson plans."

“Prospective postgraduate students working in other industries who need to upskill for a new role or have a general interest in analytics for teaching and learning will also benefit from the MOOC.”

The MOOC will bring together a large community of innovative teachers from around the globe who want to be the pioneers of Analytics in their school. No previous knowledge in data-driven instruction, teaching and learning analytics is required.
