I’m not sure everyone will agree with me, but I have this theory about our eLearning industry. My, entirely personal, view based on the completely unscientific sample of what I have seen and heard over the years is that we take to new technology just that shade suspiciously. Once the initial acceptance is in place, though we go about adopting it quite enthusiastically. A glance at the adoption curve of mLearning will probably substantiate what I mean. There is another technology trend that has been sweeping the world for a few years now but has only just started appearing more commonly in eLearning – Big Data.

In the last couple of years a new trend named "Big Data" has become very popular. A large number of start-ups specialize in collection and analysis of huge amounts of data. Large corporations are also not far behind, currently working to establish new departments and teams in order to develop products of this kind. It’s important to understand that the intention is not just to collect large amounts of data, but also to handle it effectively.

In this article I will focus on big data in eLearning, the unique advantages big data can offer to eLearning professionals, and how big data will impact the future of eLearning industry.
