LMS Is Old News: Enter The Era Of The eLMS

LMS is quickly losing ground to eLMS. The latter is a hybrid of social media, communication platforms, and engagement features that foster higher collaboration and informal learning. This particularly stems to the lack of flexibility and technological capabilities traditional LMSs have. This post discusses what to look for in an eLMS and how its average features can be used to increase interaction and collaboration.

Employees Dread Training? Making Employee Training And Development Engaging

Picture it: It’s time for employee training and development at work. You're in a board room with a handful of your colleagues, struggling to stay awake as a trainer slowly progresses through a PowerPoint presentation. This particular session is about a new software tool you're going to use for work in three months. Your mind keeps drifting as the trainer's monotone voice starts to ring hollow in your ears, and your colleagues are starting to nod off. Unfortunately for many working people, this is an all-too-familiar scenario. The idea of having to sit through another boring training session probably doesn't get their blood pumping. And when they get to that session, they're likely to have their eyes glued to their phones, checking the latest football scores. Even worse, when they leave the room, they've practically forgotten half of the content, and they'll only lose more as time goes by.

When an eLearning professional encounters the word “methodology”, they are likely to think of ADDIE, or maybe SAM. However, today you’re in for a surprise, for I’m not talking about a course authoring methodology. Self-Advocacy: “Is That All There Is?” Or Can We Add Value To eLearning By Creating A Self Advocacy Culture?

Do you ever wonder what celebrities from days gone by would think of your eLearning courses? I think all the time about how I would answer mid-20th century American jazz singer Peggy Lee if she asked me, “Is that all there is… to eLearning?”. Regrettably, the world will never know what contributions miss Lee might have made to our eLearning initiatives. I am going to insist here though that training to become a better “worker bee” is not all there is to eLearning. Here is how a culture of self-advocacy can add value to the eLearning universe.

For Instructional Designers: Socratic Inquiry Version 2.0.

Sometimes the best way to make a point is by storytelling. This story is mine. And it is true. And I’m happy it happened to me. It should happen to everybody, and it doesn’t; and it’s my mission to remedy that. Here is some insight into developing critical thinking through Socratic Inquiry and why Instructional Designers should pay attention to such an approach.

How To Reduce Scrap Learning In Training: Take It From Librarians, We Know Scrap When We See It

When it comes to our collections, great public librarians are like great Instructional Designers: We keep them current, relevant, appealing, and responsive to our communities. Keeping our collections useful and looking good means we have to get rid of things though. That’s right: Public libraries throw books away. Here is how to reduce scrap learning in your training.
