Over the course of my career in the eLearning industry I have been directly involved in hundreds of LMS implementations. I have seen every variation in terms of terms of size and complexity. An LMS implementation can take anywhere from 1 hour to 2 years depending on the particular system you have opted for.
A traditional implementation process looks something like:
- Requirements workshops
- Solution design
- Customizations
- Data migration
- Administrator Training
- UAT
- Bug Fixing
- More UAT

1. Reduce Complexity
One of the main reasons Des Anderson and I founded LearnUpon was to reduce the complexity and the timeframe required to implement an LMS. I had seen so many costly and inefficient large scale implementations that I knew there had to be a better method for both the vendor and the company. As a result of cloud based solutions, at LearnUpon, we have seen a move from a scenario where the LMS implementation took up 90% of the time and resources to the LMS selection process being the core focus. Companies can now afford to invest more time ensuring they are selecting the best solution for their organisation and also be confident that once that decision is made there is very little time before they can launch and start seeing a return on their investment.
2. Try Out The Platform Before You Commit
The importance of a quick launch will also vary depending on your organization’s internal procedures. My advice would be to include questions about timelines with your inquiry to ensure the vendor can help you to meet all important milestones and deadlines. In addition make sure they can give you access to a sandbox or a trial portal so that you can properly try out their platform before you make a commitment on going with a vendor.
3. New Feature Releases
In addition to a quicker setup time there are many other benefits of a cloud based LMS including regular new feature releases without the need to upgrade, no hardware to purchase, instant scalability and more transparent and predictable pricing.
The ideal implementation process for us, at LearnUpon, looks like this:
- Decide your requirements
- Sit in on a tailored demonstration with an experienced Account Manager
- Pilot the LMS with a free trial (test out whether a 24/7 Customer Support is available)
- Administrator Training from Customer Success team
- Configure any integrations (e.g. Salesforce, Single Sign-on, etc.)
- Go Live!
