Summary: You can design simulation training to give learners feedback on their actions in the experience. Whether you stop learners during the training or give them feedback at the end, a simulation can point out to learners exactly what they’re doing wrong so they can correct their behavior. But where to start, and how to start exactly?

How Investing In Simulation Training Can Help Employees Learn In A Safe Environment

When developing a training strategy, it is important to consider how you will design the training. Simulation training is often a great choice as it simulates activities employees perform in the workplace. There are many reasons why you should use this learning approach compared to other methods. Every training solution should aim to increase the performance of employees. But how can companies determine which delivery will impact performance most effectively? It isn't very straightforward to determine how simulation training can improve performance for your workforce. That's why this eBook by Designing Digitally is really useful if you are looking for the answer to the above questions.

We all know that there are tons of training methods available, all of which have some components of effectiveness. However, simulation training is the only way to give students hands-on practice in a safe, controlled environment. The debate over learning styles is a hot topic in the Learning and Development space. Some professionals in the field believe they’re a fable, while others feel strongly that we should design training programs to reach different styles of learners. We should all agree that if you’re going to explain to someone how to complete a physical exercise, you should let them repeat the action. You can’t expect anyone to learn anything by just telling them about it or showing them. You have to let participants perform the action so that they have actually done it. Training simulations facilitate this “learn by doing” approach.

Learn By Doing 3.0

Every training solution should aim to increase the performance of employees. However, companies often struggle with determining which delivery will impact performance most effectively. Training has been a major pillar for improving employee skills and performance for a long time, from getting a new employee up and running to helping a worker up the ranks. These trainings have traditionally been performed as lectures, presentations, workshops, and eLearning seminars. New and improved trainings are being created every day to more effectively develop employees. Training simulations are amongst them; virtual representations of real-world activities in a digital environment. They are regularly tailored to a particular task. Simulations may seem intuitively appealing over alternative options but there are very clear advantages to simulation training over simpler training. It's just a question of recognizing what these points are.

Well-designed simulation provides a clear association between the simulated task and the desired competency. Some of the very clear advantages are doubling sales, reducing time-to-completion, or ensuring compliance with regulations. As a result of this alignment, there is a structure that is created, but the true power of simulations comes from the stories that unfold as employees make their own decisions and face those consequences in a safe environment. Storytelling as an instructional tool or a medium of exchange has always proven to be very powerful, and simulations provide a unique opportunity to place the learner at the center of their own story. These simulated events create a space for learners to form conceptual connections between ideas, actions, and consequences in a manner that feels personal and meaningful. Experiences such as these are the most effective ways to maximize employee performance.

If a simulation is an imitation of a real-world process that is used to provide a realistic experience, we have come to an era where learning by doing is the new norm. Industries have adopted simulations for the different advantages it brings to each field. It could be the ability for trainees to practice in a safe environment that makes it a preferred training option or the fact that it’s allowing trainees the ability to understand human behavior, develop teamwork or increase confidence that makes training simulations a favorite training vehicle. Authentic simulation training allows employees to buy into the training task and to get deeply involved with the task at hand; they learn to really own the task and simultaneously feel free by being able to experiment with the activity. This is met with immediate, organic, and realistic feedback leading to real improvements in performance.
