Interview With Dr. Joan Carles March About The Patient School Project

At LearningLovers.org we had the opportunity to attend the First National Health Hackathon organized at the headquarters of Madrid Google Campus by the Association of Researchers in eHealth (AIES). In this event, programmers and designers meet the needs of patients and healthcare professionals, developing health applications and games designed to promote training, education in healthy habits, and adherence to therapy. Here is what we learned about the Patient School project.

Creating A Virtual Spanish Language Learning Community

Spanish speaking children, teens, and adults use their public libraries for a variety of programs, classes, materials, and other services and resources. Many public library professionals who don’t speak Spanish lament their inability to serve these patrons as effectively as they would like. Many, though, have an admirable desire to learn. As you would guess, we don’t have time or money to travel to instructor-led language classes and, anyway, we are 16% through the 21st century! So, the Indiana State Library Spanish Language Learning Community is getting together in a virtual environment to learn and practice speaking in ways that relate to our library roles. Here is my first chapter in Aprendiendo con Bibliotecarios (Learning with Librarians) with details on the framework, development of the curriculum and assessment tool, and the web-based tools we are using for learning and conversation practice.

Using Virtual Reality In Education

The beginning of the Sixties, besides the Cuban Crisis and the rise of the hippie movement, is notable for giving birth to Sensorama, one of the earliest prototypes of the modern virtual reality equipment. It allowed for viewing stereoscopic 3D images accompanied by stereo sound, smells, as well as wind effect. The device was revolutionary for its time, and it spearheaded the development of what Jaron Zepel Lanier dubbed in 1989 as “Virtual Reality” (VR). Having obtained a catchy name, the new technology has been gathering new adherents ever since.
