What is Peer Review by FeedbackFruits?

The pedagogical tool Peer Review enables instructors to create assignments for students to provide feedback to their peers on deliverables.

How does the Peer Review tool work?

With Peer Review, instructors can organise a solid peer reviewing process from beginning to end by allowing students to upload deliverables for their peers to review. The instructor can add specific instructions, deadlines, as well as review criteria (rubrics or scales) which will guide students throughout the reviewing process. The distribution ensures that students who provide feedback will also have their reports reviewed.

This means that the instructor’s focus can shift from organising to mentoring the Peer Review process. This is supported by transparent analytics, information on possible intervention moments and straight forward moderation.

This tool was designed with ease of use in mind. Therefore, depending on the teacher’s didactic method, it allows them to create various learning activities such as:

  • Enhanced peer feedback by letting students rate their reviewer (Free University)
  • Streamlining the feedback and reflection process (OsloMet)

Important pedagogical features:

  • Adding extensive rubrics and criteria options
  • Adding reviewer anonymity
  • Contribution grading

Overview of Peer Review by FeedbackFruits benefits

Why is Peer Review useful for learning?

Peer Review can improve the final version of a report, or alternatively, make students more aware of their skills. Research revealed that students regard the feedback from their teacher as absolute truth while feedback from peers creates doubt, which activates students to think critically about their work (Sadler and Good 2006, 23-28). In consequence, students’ self-knowledge as well as other skills (e.g., coaching, cooperation, debate) are improved.

A bit of background…

The Peer Review tool is a result of a collaboration between partners from the EdTech DoTank, comprised of over 40 leading universities, such as MITx, TUDelft, Deakin and HULT International Business School. All partners are united in their aim and dedication to accelerate the implementation of active, blended and online learning. The DoTank is facilitated by FeedbackFruits, as is the process of creating and distributing evidence-based learning activities and the digital means to support them.

We work with international universities that aim to speed up pedagogical innovation in higher education. Each of our tools are carefully designed by co-creating with instructors and students to support an ever-increasing number of learning activities.
