Facing History and Ourselves is expanding its portfolio of online professional learning for middle and high school educators and is seeking an experienced Director of Online Learning Development and Production with a background in K-12 professional development to lead the Online Learning team. The Director of Online Learning Development and Production will be responsible for leading a cross-functional team to develop and produce innovative online professional learning offerings for educators including: facilitated, non-facilitated, and hybrid courses and workshops (delivered via LMS); scripted, animated video tutorials (à la Lynda.com); model lesson videos (à la TeachingChannel.org); interactive webinars; as well as quick-start guides and other downloadable companion instructional materials. This position will act as lead instructional designer in the conceptualization of online professional learning, as well as the head of product development for online learning products.

Responsibilities
  • Bring pedagogy into practice by leading the conceptualization and development of innovative professional learning products that model Facing History online.
  • Act as lead instructional designer for online learning team. Mentor online learning staff to assess learner needs and write outcomes-based courses and workshops that align with the Learning Forward Standards for professional learning.
  • Lead the online learning team in the development of online professional learning products: courses, workshops, webinars, videos, etc. Oversee curriculum writing; media production; and course creation in the learning management system. Mentor team members in using eLearning software (such as Articulate 360, Camtasia Studio, etc.). Recruit and manage outside freelancers and vendors to supplement team as needed.
  • Lead the online learning team in the delivery of facilitated online courses, workshops, and webinars, partnering with Program Staff and adjuncts to facilitate multi-day and/or multi-week college-style courses. Oversee the process for granting graduate credits (for those participants who request it).
  • Collaborate with the Director of Program Digital Strategy and web team in the development of an online “Implementation Center” where educators can learn more about how to implement Facing History programs 24/7 via animated tutorials, classroom videos, FAQs, and discussion/sharing tools.
  • Partner with in-house video producer to plan, shoot, and produce authentic classroom videos that demonstrate the Facing History scope and sequence.
  • Oversee the development and management of project plans, taking responsibility for project scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, and communication to ensure the delivery of solutions within scope, timeline, and budget parameters.
  • Stay current on latest issues, technology and methods of online learning through research, networking, and attending/or presenting at conferences.
  • Work with the Director of Digital Strategy to market online learning products and drive customer acquisition to meet Facing History’s goals for educator growth.
  • Work with the Director of Digital Strategy to integrate the vision and strategy of online learning into larger organization goals. 

 

Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience conceptualizing and developing online learning for educators.
  • 5+ years leading an eLearning development and production team.
  • 5+ years classroom teaching at the secondary or higher ed level preferred.
  • 5+ Experience creating professional development in the K-12 marketplace preferred.
  • BA/BS degree required. Advanced degree in instructional design preferred.
  • Experience in the development, management and operations of hybrid/online programs in education or the development of content for use in education at scale.
  • Experience managing instructional design and production personnel.
  • Experience working with learning management systems and emergent platform technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing new learning models and bringing innovative ideas to fruition.
  • Experience managing budgets for multiple large-scale content design, development and production projects.
  • Expert understanding of best practices in hybrid/online education, including organizational models, delivery formats, technology tools, instructional design, staffing, processes and workflow.
Who You Are

The position will collaborate with Facing History’s Program SMEs, online learning team members, content writers, and visual media developers to craft user-centered instruction based on best practices of adult learning, eLearning, and in accordance with the Learning Forward Standards for professional learning for educators. The position will supervise a small team of in-house instructional and graphic/media designers and producers as well as recruit and manage external eLearning contributors, course facilitators, and outside media production and eLearning vendors. Ultimately, this candidate’s team will be responsible for creating all the different online products in Facing History’s professional learning portfolio as well as innovating new methods of supporting Facing History’s educator audience.

The successful candidate will be an expert in instructional design and production and will also have experience creating professional learning (including developing authentic classroom videos) for the educator audience. This candidate will understand the professional learning needs of middle and high school teachers in particular, will be familiar with approaches to teaching adolescents, and will be able to develop professional learning that helps educators improve their practice.

The successful candidate will have experience leading and mentoring a cross-functional eLearning team (content writers, graphic/web designers, course facilitators), and implementing planning and execution processes that enable the efficient output of innovative high quality online professional learning products.

The successful candidate will have experience developing large-scale learning systems with role-differentiated learning pathways that can be mapped modularly inside a learning learning management system. The candidate will be able to develop curriculum as well as create interactive learning objects and formative and summative assessments.
