2016 EADL Conference

In 2016 EADL Conference, as well as presentations on the application of cutting edge developments like Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, there will be a timely re-appraisal  of the use and effectiveness of more familiar resources such as video and e-books, and a look at the latest applications of Learner Management Systems and e-learning platforms.

The keynote speaker is dr. ir. Robert Schuwer:

The previous years brought many developments in open and online education, especially with the rise of the MOOCs. Although it seems that this is only happening in publicly funded educational institutions, more and more other organisations are experimenting with several forms of open online education. In my presentation, I will sketch current trends in open and online education and the opportunities and challenges these offer.

Robert Schuwer (1955) received an MSc in Mathematics at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (1980) and an MSc Computer Science at the Eindhoven University of Technology (1989). On the latter university he did his PhD in 1993 on a thesis about knowledge base systems. Robert’s working experience includes teaching mathematics in secondary education, consultancy for ICT related issues, assistant professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology (department Management Science) and CTO in a software company.

Currently, he is Lector (Professor) Open Educational Resources (OER) at Fontys University of Applied Sciences, School of ICT in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Since 2006 the majority of his work is about OER and Open Education. He was appointed project leader for the OpenER-project at the Open University (the Netherlands) in 2006, which was the first OER project in The Netherlands and as
project leader in the Wikiwijs program, aiming at enhancing awareness on OER and creating a national infrastructure for OER, initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Education. Currently, he is responsible for research on and realisation of an OER-based curriculum.

He gives many presentations on this subject, both nationally and internationally. He is chairman of the Special Interest Group Open Education, established by SURF and chairman of the Information Center Committee of the Open Education Consortium.
