Learning Analytics Improves The L&D Craft

The craft of L&D is to make learners somehow better. To do this, we identify a learning need, design and develop a learning experience (LX), and deploy it. Far too often, we learn little thereafter about how the LX actually impacted learners beyond status (# not started, in progress, completed) and possibly a score. We discover nothing. So each subsequent attempt remains a first-best guess.

L&D is a process. If we take pride in our craftsmanship, we learn from each LX we deploy, so the next one is always better. Observing how learners think, feel, and behave while they're in an LX helps us become steadily smarter at our craft.

In this session, John Cleave describes a number of practical ways you can capture insight into what learners are thinking, feeling, and doing while engaged in LX, to better determine what's working and what needs refinement, as well as to grow your L&D expertise.
