How Are AI And Hyperscalers Changing Channel Management And Partner Marketing?
AI and the hyperscalers have added a second channel alongside the partners vendors already work with. AWS, Microsoft and Google run cloud marketplaces where customers buy software, often through a partner on a private or multiparty offer, and each runs a co-sell program that puts its own sellers alongside the vendor's. At the same time, buyers use AI assistants to research suppliers before they speak to anyone.
For a channel manager, that means rules of engagement with a hyperscaler's sellers, partner economics that change when customers pay by usage, and deals that close on a marketplace listing. For a partner marketer, it means campaigns that point at a marketplace listing as often as a partner's website, co-marketing with a cloud provider as well as a reseller, and partner content written for buyers who first meet it inside an AI answer.
The job adverts already show it. Channel Institute research into live adverts in September 2026 found Palo Alto Networks hiring a Director of CSP and Hyperscaler Partner Marketing with ten years' experience, HPE a Marketplace GTM Program Leader with seven, and Salesforce a Hyperscaler Partner Sales Senior Manager with fifteen.
What Should Partner Marketing Training Cover Now?
Partner marketing training should still start with the fundamentals of marketing through partners, then add marketplaces, hyperscaler co-marketing and AI-led buying on top. The fundamentals have not gone away. The partner marketer still plans campaigns they will not run themselves, spends market development funds through companies they do not control, and has to prove a return.
Those fundamentals are positioning a partner in a crowded market, building a joint value proposition, segmenting and targeting for co-marketing, planning the campaign, defining buyer personas, aligning partner content with the buyer's journey, and benchmarking the return on co-marketing spend. Most resellers are small firms led by technologists, often without a full-time marketer, so the vendor's partner marketing team ends up writing much of their playbook.
The Channel Institute's partner marketing training, the Certificate in Channel Marketing, covers those fundamentals for marketers inside technology vendors. It has ten online, self-paced modules, takes about 20 hours of study and ends in an online exam with a 70% pass mark. Those who pass become a Certified Channel Marketing Professional, a credential an employer can verify. The syllabus is reviewed by the Channel Institute's independent Industry Advisory Council of 27 senior channel leaders at companies including Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle and SAP. It costs US$1,900, with a full refund within 30 days for anyone who has not gone beyond module 5, and a module can be tried free before buying. Its campaign planning module teaches P.A.C.K.A.G.E.S, the Institute's own method for building a co-marketing campaign with a partner.
What Should Channel Management Training Cover Now?
Channel management training should cover the whole partner lifecycle, from recruiting and onboarding partners through joint business planning, incentives, deal registration, channel data and channel conflict, and then the new questions hyperscalers raise about co-sell and partner economics. The Channel Institute's Certificate in Channel Management covers the lifecycle in ten modules, with the same online format, exam and price as the marketing certificate, leading to Certified Channel Management Professional.
What Should Channel Sales Training Cover?
Channel sales training should teach people to sell with and through partners: motivating partners, building a joint value proposition and joint business plan, joint solution selling, joint prospecting, qualifying the shared pipeline and evaluating partner performance. The Channel Institute's Certificate in Channel Sales covers that ground in ten modules.
Why Do Channel And Partner Marketing Roles Ask For So Much Experience?
Because employers have little else to judge the skill by. In September 2026, Channel Institute research read 362 live channel and partner job adverts at 53 technology vendors and distributors, including AWS, Cisco, HP and Salesforce. Across those 362 adverts, the median experience asked for was five years.
Channel Institute research found that partner marketing asks for more. Of the 27 channel and partner marketing adverts in the September 2026 sample, 22 stated a years figure, the median was six years, and only two would consider a candidate with two years or less. Of the 277 adverts that stated any figure, 73 asked for eight to fifteen years, and employers at that level expect people to design partner programs rather than run partner accounts.
For someone moving into partner marketing from corporate or field marketing, an assessed qualification puts something on the page that is not a date range.
Is Partner Marketing The Same As Channel Marketing?
Yes. Partner marketing and channel marketing are two names for the same work: a vendor marketing to, with and through the channel partners who sell its products. This is training for the vendor's own channel and partner marketing teams, not partner enablement content for resellers.
Where Do AI And Hyperscalers Fit In The Training?
They sit in the Channel Institute's new Certificate in Channel Partner Ecosystems, an advanced certificate that follows the core certificates in channel management, channel sales and channel marketing. Its ten modules cover cloud marketplaces, hyperscaler co-sell through AWS ACE, Microsoft Partner Center and Google's partner programs, partner economics when the unit of sale changes, rewarding partner value, how buyers use AI to research suppliers, and AI agents in the channel. Every claim in it is dated and graded, so learners can separate what has happened from what is forecast.
The certificate takes about 20 hours of self-paced study, ends in an online exam with a 70% pass mark and leads to Certified Channel Ecosystem Professional. It costs US$1,900, and Module 2, Route-to-Market Design, can be tried free. A core certificate supplies the fundamentals of working through partners; the Ecosystems certificate adds the AI and hyperscaler material on top.
